Abstract/Description: The Max D. Klein Papers consists of correspondence (1948-1969) with Louis Finkelstein, Maurice Jacobs, Marshall Bernstein, Yaakov Rosenberg, and others; notes, drafts, and correspondence concerning the prayerbook compiled by Klein; sermons; photographs of Klein and others; records of weddings and other functions (circa 1918-1969); minutes, correspondence, reports, brochures, circulars, and other materials concerning the Northwestern Jewish Religious Association (1905-1908), and Jewish organizations in Philadelphia (1946-1969); and material on fundraising for the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (1948-1949). The music scores (formerly ARC MUS 8) represent a sampling of the music used in an American Conservative synagogue from the late-nineteenth until the mid-twentieth century. Max D. Klein was rabbi at Philadelphia's Congregation Adath Jeshurun from 1911-1960. During this time period he was assisted by such notable cantors as Jacob Beimel (1920-1929) and W. Belskin Ginsburg (1935-1960). He also worked with organist William Noelsch, an important musical figure who played at Adath Jeshurun from 1881 until 1919.
