Congregation Shaare Zedek (New York, NY) Records, The Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, N.Y., ARC.1000.105, (Box #, Folder #). Funding for the retrospective conversion of the original finding aid documents to produce this guide using Archivists’ Toolkit was made possible by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). Congregation Shaare Zedek was founded in New York City in October 1839. Its members were Jews of Eastern European origin who prayed "according to the Polish minhag." The synagogue's first congregational home was a rented portion of a house on Pearl Street in lower Manhattan. In 1899, perhaps in order to accommodate a group that wanted to move uptown, Shaare Zedek purchased a site on West 118th Street near Lenox Avenue in Harlem for what became an uptown offshoot, Chaari Zedek of Harlem. In 1914, Shaare Zedek merged with Chaari Zedek, joining it in its 118th Street building. In 1921, the synagogue sold the 118th Street building, and on April 15, 1923, it dedicated the building on West 93d Street where it remains today. Shaare Zedek acquired its first long term, permanent rabbi in 1922 in Elias Solomon, a 1904 Seminary graduate, who remained until his death in 1956. English, Hebrew, German |
