Rabbi Stanley Rabinowitz was born in Duluth, Minnesota on November 18, 1921. He received his bachelor's degree from the State University of Iowa in 1939; was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1943; received his masters degree in sociology from Yale in 1950; and was later awarded an honorary doctorate of divinity from the Seminary. In 1960, Rabinowitz took the pulpit at Adas Israel, in Washington D.C., serving as rabbi until 1986. During this period, Rabinowitz was deeply involved in Washington politics and diplomacy, especially relating to issues concerning Israel; one of the leading members of the Rabbinical Assembly; the founding president of the Movement for the Reaffirmation of Conservative Judaism (MERCAZ); and instrumental in the leadership of The Masorti Foundation for Conservative Judaism in Israel.
