Phone: 212.678.8973 or via E-mail: archives@jtsa.edu. Rabbi Richard Hammerman was born in New York City on December 2, 1946. He received a B.S. from Columbia University in 1968, a B.H.L. from the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1969, and rabbinic ordination from JTS in 1973. He was the acting rabbi of the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale from 1973-1974, and the Rabbi of Congregation B'nai Israel (Toms River, N.J.) from 1974 until his retirement in 2006. While rabbi of Congregation B'nai Israel (Toms River, N.J.), Rabbi Hammerman was also involved in the civic affairs of the broader community. He served as the chaplain of the Dover Township Police Department, was a member of the Ethnic Heritage Council of Dover Township and the Eagle Scout Review Board, and in addition to being a member of the Inter-Faith Housing Coalition of Dover Township, he participated in a number of interfaith worship services.
