|Abstract/Description:||The Max D. Klein Papers consists of correspondence (1948-1969) with Louis Finkelstein, Maurice Jacobs, Marshall Bernstein, Yaakov Rosenberg, and others; notes, drafts, and correspondence concerning the prayerbook compiled by Klein; sermons; photographs of Klein and others; records of weddings and other functions (circa 1918-1969); minutes, correspondence, reports, brochures, circulars, and other materials concerning the Northwestern Jewish Religious Association (1905-1908), and Jewish organizations in Philadelphia (1946-1969); and material on fundraising for the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (1948-1949).|
Rabbi Max Klein was born in New York City in 1885 and was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1911. In addition to serving as rabbi at Congregation Adath Jeshurun in Philadelphia for over fifty years, Rabbi Klein wrote, edited, and translated two prayer books: Seder Avodah for Sabbath, Festivals, and Weekdays, 1951 and Seder Avodah for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, 1960.
