Richard Yellin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 24, 1942. In 1964, he earned a Bachelor of Science in History and Philosophy from Columbia while simultaneously obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Jewish Studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary; he earned a Master of Hebrew Literature in 1967 and his rabbinic ordination in 1969. Directly after his academic studies, Yellin served as one of the Army's military chaplains in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and from 1970 through 1971, Yellin was the Jewish Chaplain for the Republic of Korea. In 1976, Yellin began a career as the Senior Rabbi at Mishkan Tefila (Newton, M.A.) from 1976-1991. Yellin was an active member of the Conservative movement, and a prolific writer and commentator on civil rights, interfaith religion, Jewish American culture, Judaism, and Zionism.
