JTSA. Commission for the Study of the Ordination of Women as Rabbis Records, The Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, N.Y., R.G.30, (Box #, Folder #). Funding for the retrospective conversion of the original finding aid documents to produce this guide using Archivists’ Toolkit was made possible by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). At its convention in May 1977, the Rabbinical Assembly adopted a resolution asking the chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, then Gerson Cohen, to appoint an interdisciplinary commission to study the possibility of admitting women to the Conservative rabbinate. The Commission was directed to submit its opinion to the Rabbinical Assembly's 1979 convention. At the end of its deliberations, the commission voted eleven to three in favor of admitting women to the Conservative rabbinate. It submitted this opinion to the Rabbinical Assembly in its report of January 30, 1979. Despite this recommendation, the Seminary Senate, composed of the faculty, did not vote to admit women until 1983. English, Hebrew |
