Note(s): |
The blessings are written in two columns and include: the three blessings recited before the megillah reading, ha-Rav et Rivenu, and an excerpt from Shoshanat Yaʻaḳov. The piyyut Ḳore megilah is inscribed in the arches and columns of the arcade. It begins at the top of the right-side arch and ends in the center column. The initials "S.H." are punched into the upper two corners of the document. On the sheet's reverse is inscribed the letter "B" (twice), "N", "L 6" and the number "VI". Black ink. Shelfmark: New York, Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary, (NS)BL1. Digitization funded by the Dr. Georgette Bennett and Dr. Leonard Polonsky Digitization Project. Dimensions in inches: 17 3/4 x 22 1/2 cm. Decoration: An arcade of two round arches supported by three twisted Corinthian columns frames the megillah blessings. Each arch is framed by two narrow bands; its central section encloses a rope pattern. The piyyut Kore Megillah is inscribed within the bands and ropes; it continues in the abacuses, shafts, bases and plinths of the columns below. Decoration: Two orange- and green-colored swags, separated by a green tassled pull, hang within each arch, above the blessings. Decoration (cartouches): Two large cartouches that enclose narrative vignettes appear beneath the blessings. The cartouche on the right shows two men seated at a table and holding up goblets. That on the left contains an illustration of four individuals fighting (right) and two musicians (violinist and cellist, left). Two additional cartouches, each topped by a fruit(?) basket and enclosing a cityscape, rest on the outer haunches of the arches above. At the intersection of the arches is a an orange and green foliate element surmounted by a double-headed eagle. Ruling: Hardpoint Watercolor Hebrew : Italian square hand. Adler, Elkan N., Collection. The panel is dirty and has many creases. Its decoration and illustrations have faded. A small piece of paper is glued over the lower right edge of the cartouche on the right. The decoration was painted over the paper. |
