These scores were collected and used by Finnell in his career as a vocal instructor and choir director from the 1940s until the early 2000s. | |
Abstract/Description: | This collection consists of vocal arrangements for various liturgical pieces. Materials are arranged alphabetically by title. The sheet music in this collection consists primarily of photocopies of handwritten materials, annotated printed scores, and some manuscripts. Composers represented in the Finnell Collection include Israel Alter, Morris Barash, Jacob Beimel, Abraham Wolf Binder, Isadore Freed, Max Helfman, Louis Lewandowski, Emanuel Amiran Pougatchov, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, Sholom Secunda, and Sol Zim (Cantor Sol Zimelman). A complete inventory of sheet music can be searched to identify the composers, original titles, and other identifying information of the pieces in this collection. | |

Maurice Finnell Choral Music Scores, The Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, N.Y., ARC.MUS.30, (Box #, Folder #). Maurice Finnell was a composer, sight-singing instructor, and vocal coach. Finnell was born in 1916 in Trenton, New Jersey as Maurice Finkle. He began his singing career as a choirboy in the People of Truth Synagogue at age 9 and became an alto soloist at age 12. In 1933, he performed the theme song for the Douglas Fairbanks film Reaching For The Moon live at the RKO Lincoln and Capital Theaters at the age of 16. He performed on radio networks in New York and Philadelphia, and made his opera debut with the Trenton Opera Company in 1941. He was a guest soloist with the Trenton Choral Society and Trenton Philharmonic. During World War II, Finnell served as a music instructor for soldiers. After the war, his song “A Lonely Town” was recorded by Herb Lance and the Ray Charles Singers and he directed the musical department of Camp Wigwam in Harrison, Maine, which was attended by Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, the Selznicks and the Zukors. He began teaching in 1947 and continued until the time of his death, teaching sight-reading and musicianship at the American Theatre Wing, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, New York University, The Vocal Arts Foundation and the Turtle Bay Music School, as well as at the Metropolitan Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and the Ansonia Hotel. Some of his former students include Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, and Christine Baranski. Finnell also conducted choirs during the high holidays at the Laurelton Jewish Center in Queens and at synagogues in Connecticut and New York City, using his choral music collection featuring arrangements from his early days as a choirboy in Trenton.
