Abstract/Description: | This collection consists of the piano score for an opera titled "Miriam and the Angel of Death," composed by Lee Goldstein with a libretto by Raymond P. Scheindlin in 1984, and includes both a bound volume and several loose pages. Lee Goldstein was a composer of vocal, dance, and theater music, as well as a vocal coach and lecturer. Born in 1953 in Woodbury, New Jersey, Lee Goldstein held degrees in composition from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and Queens College, City University of New York, where he studied with composer Hugo Weisgall. He was appointed to the position of composer-in-residence at the Lyric Opera in Chicago in 1987, though he was only able to produce one opera there before his death at age 37 in 1990. Hugo Weisgall, who also served as chairman of the faculty of the Cantors Institute at JTS, hired Goldstein as a music instructor around 1984. It was through this connection that Goldstein came to collaborate with Raymond Scheindlin, then an associate professor of medieval Hebrew literature at JTS, on ''Miriam and the Angel of Death." Scheindlin wrote the libretto, based on I.L. Peretz's short story "Mesires nefesh" ("Devotion Without End," 1904) and Goldstein composed the music. The opera was produced by JTS in conjunction with the new Library opening on campus, and was performed twice at the Feinberg Auditorium in June 1984. Goldstein's other compositions include the comic opera that resulted from his residency at the Lyric titled ''The Fan,'' based on Carlo Goldoni's farce, ''Il Ventaglio';' and ''An Idiot Dance,'' based on Euripides' ''The Trojan Women,'' produced in Ohio in 1976.
