Abstract/Description: | This collection consists of one "cantor's book," a bound volume of musical notations in both pencil and ink presumably used by Cantor Koussevitzsky to lead congregations in prayer. Prayer lyrics, instructions, and notes are written in both English and Hebrew.There are many blank pages, and some pages appear to have been inserted from other sources. An inscription at the front of the volume reads "Cantor J. Kucewicki, London, Dalston Synagogue, 19 (28/7) 35." A stamp on the final page reads "Rosh Pina Congregation, 123 Matheson Avenue, Winnipeg 4, Manitoba." |

Cantor Jacob Koussevitzsky was born in 1903 in Smarhon (Smorgon) in present-day Belarus to Alta and Avigdor Koussevitzky, both musicians. He is the second of four brothers, all of whom had successful careers as cantors - Moshe, David, and Simcha. In 1936 Jacob moved to London, where he served as the cantor at Dalston Synagogue, also known as the Poets Road Synagogue. From Poets Road, Jacob went to the Western Synagogue in London and in 1951 he decided to go to the Americas. For two years he was the cantor of the Congregation Rosh Pinah in Winnipeg, Canada, and in 1953 he became the cantor at the Jewish Center of Kew Gardens Hills in New York City. He died in 1959.
