Abstract/Description: | The Golden Mean is key to Judaism, do not go to extremes. Everything in moderation. This is the same of Jewish practice as it is with secular aspects, like drinking or spending money. Foolish piety is piety taken to the extreme. McCarthy as an example of going too extreme in pursuit of a good idea, i.e. squashing communism. The threat of a bomb is an example of too extreme in politics, it invites the angel of death. Goldwater trying to moderate image damage by explaining that he is an extremist in all regards of his life. Moderate extremism in American Politics and in Judaism. Changes to new sermon at 24 minute mark. On the sacrifice of Isaac. Peace is a very difficult vision to realize. It's important to keep working towards our vision of Israel and Zionism, and be willing to make sacrifices like Abraham. | |
