Ms. codex. A few explanations of selected novellae, with instructions to print them, were added by Solomon (Shalom) Elhanan Jaffe, a descendent of the author (the name St. Louis is penciled on fol. 17r, cf. below). Written in two columns with space left on each page to accommodate further novellae. Copy imperfect: Novellae from Berakhot through most of Pesahim wanting; stubs throughout indicate that leaves have been cut out. Digitization funded by The National Library of Israel. Alexander Moses Lapidot (1819-1906) was born in Vilna and studied in yeshivot in Lithuania, at one time under Israel Lipkin (Salanter). He was a rabbi in Janow and Grodno, and from 1866, in Rossiyeny (Raseiniai). The author of Avne zikaron (1897) and Divre emet (1910 and 1966), he published articles of divre Torah on contemporary issues in various journals. An ardent and early supporter of Hoveve Zion, Lapidot insisted that Erets Yisrael be acquired by agricultural labor based on a religious way of life (Enc. Judaica) Solomon Elhanan Jaffe was a rabbi in St. Louis, 1891-1897, and in New York, 1897-1923; a founder of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the U.S. and Canada, he served for many years as president (The Philadelphia Group: a guide to archival and bibliographic collections / Dianne Ashton, Rowan College of New Jersey; Center For American Jewish History, Temple University) Hebrew and Aramaic. |
