Collection includes archival recordings of Binder officiating at Jewish weddings, 1948-49; some memorabilia from World War II, 1943; concert programs, 1970-91; unpublished reminiscences, n.d.; lectures, n.d.; music manuscript books, n.d.; and publicity photos, ca. 1965. |

Jonah Binder Papers, Scores, Photographs, and Audio Recordings, The Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, N.Y., ARC MUS 27 (Box #, folder #). Jonah Binder was born April 25, 1917 on New York’s Lower East Side. Binder studied hazzanut with Cantor Eliyahu Shnipelisky. During 1943 Binder was cantor at Brooklyn’s Judea Centre and was drafted that same year into the U.S. Navy, serving in upstate New York. At this time and after the war, Binder officiated and sang at various New York City weddings. He received a B.A. from Long Island University and a Master of Music [Education?] degree from Columbia University, circa 1954. Binder earned his living in a variety of musical professions. He received a New York City teacher’s license in the late 1950s and spent his entire teaching career as a vocal music teacher at JHS 263 in Brownsville, Brooklyn, N.Y. For many years he held a position as Chairman in Music for the N.Y.C. Board of Education. Papers in English; Music sung in Hebrew, Yiddish and English. The initial donation was retrieved in July 2000 from the home of Mrs. Claire Binder. The second and final donation was made in January 2009 by Dr. Jack Binder. |
