Abstract/Description: | Most speaking engagements at JTS are documented in the Lectures series, with the exception of the two faculty retreats in which Dr. Roskies both participated and presented. The Lectures series consist of correspondence, promotional materials, clippings, and notes from around 200 speaking engagements from the 1970s to the early 2000s. The correspondence includes invitations and logistics, as well as many thank-you notes and positive feedback following the lectures. Highlights of this series include Dr. Roskies’ appearances on the Eternal Light program on NBC; repeat engagements at the Jewish Public Library of Montreal, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, and the Jewish Museum; and dozens of lectures and scholar-in-residence weekends at synagogues, adult education programs, and Jewish community centers throughout the United States and Canada. Materials in the Lectures series are arranged alphabetically but are grouped into thematic subseries based on the site of the lecture.
Abstract/Description: | The Other series contains publications by or about Dr. Roskies, including a review of his book Responses to Catastrophe in Modern Jewish Culture in the New York Times; brochures for Prooftexts, the literary journal Roskies co-founded; and several Yiddish newspaper clippings. The series also contains two subject files that relate to Roskies’ research on the scholar Charles Leibman and three conferences on the topic of responding to catastrophe.
