Sina and Herman Berlinski papers, photographs, and audio and video recordings. 1885-2010

The Sina and Herman Berlinski Papers consist of materials collected by composer and organist Herman Berlinski (1910-2001) and his wife, pianist Sina Goldfein Berlinski (1910-2011). There are photos, printed programs and reviews that document Herman Berlinski's ("HB") numerous concert tours throughout Europe, the U.S. and Mexico, 1966-2000, as well as correspondence between husband and wife, 1939-1978. There are also academic diplomas, awards and medals earned in Germany, France and the United States, 1927-2001; manuscript and typescript autobiographical sketches by both musicians, n.d.; several albums of family photos, 1885-2004; legal files, 1952-1990s; and, finally, archival audio recordings of a Sina Berlinski ("SB") performance and interview, 1972-2010; video recordings of Herman Berlinski's interviews and performances, 1993-2000; and seven published books by other authors, usually on German-Jewish topics, 1964-2005. |b Highlights of Herman Berlinski's papers include his U.S. concert programs ("HB Concerts in the U.S.", Box 6, Section 20, folders 1-2) that provide a chronology for many of his unpublished works, 1964-1987. From wartime Europe, there are three folders of personal letters written from the French border during H.B.'s Foreign Legion service (7/21/1-3) as well as photos of his military band comrades, 1939-1940 (6/18/1). The five folders for "Europe and the War" (Box 6, Section 19) include the concert program for the premiere performance of "From the World of my Father" (entitled "Nuits"), 1939, and many documents related to the Berlinskis' emigration from France, 1933-1941.

Highlights of Sina Berlinski's papers include two rare biographical sources: a 1995 interview by Thomas Schinköth for Gewandhaus Magazin (Box 1, Section 4, folder 1) and her own "Autobiographical Sketches"," 1995-1996 (1/5/1). There are also many folders entitled "Travel" (Boxes 4-5, Sections 13-16). These are dismantled scrapbooks that contain programs, reviews and photos chronicling Herman Berlinski's Jewish music tours abroad, 1966-1995. The two "Travel: Europe" folders (Box 5, Section 15) include one letter each to HB from composers Alberto Hemsi, 1972, and Jean Langlais, 1978. Finally, there is a note from Todd Duncan, thanking SB for her "professional attitude & cooperation and encouragement," 1967 (Box 1, Section 3, folder 1). The personal photographs document both Berlinski and Goldfein families in Europe as far back as 1885, as well as the growing Herman Berlinski family in the U.S., 1941-2000. There are also several professional portraits of HB, at the keyboard or with colleagues, 1945-2000 (18/38/1).
