השכיל ... יהודא אריה [בן] יוסף פרץ. hiśkil ... Yehuda Aryeh [ben] Yosef Perets. Ms. codex. T.p., fol. 2r. Comparison with other items in the JTS collection shows that the Piyyutim in the High Holiday rite of Tunis circulated in two versions: one represented in MS 10840 and the Mahzor le-Yom Kipur ke-minhag k.k. Sefaradim (Livorno, 652 [1891 or 1892] reprinted: Israel, 1968), both of which include statutory prayers according to the Sephardic rite; the other tradition is represented with, some variations and without statutory prayers, in MSS 4205, 10031 and Mahzor le-Yamim noraim ... ke-fi minhag k.k.y. Tunis (Livorno, 1762), and most comprehensively in this codex, MS 10763, which also contains statutory prayers according to the Sephardic rite. Judah Perez, mentioned on the t.p., styles himself המאסף (collector [and editor]) and credits his son יהוסף (Yehosef) with the copying of this ms. (fol. 5r). Judah brought the ms. from Tunis, where it was probably copied, to Amsterdam for publication before making aliyah to Jerusalem (fol. 3r-4v, 272v-273r) (ועתה העיר ה' את רוחו ... להעלותו על מזבח הדפוס ... נדפס באמשטרדם, בשנח וערבה לה' מנח"ת יהודה לפ"ק [ז"א 1737 או 1738] (עמוד השער" According to the preceding note, this ms. was either copied from a printed book (Amsterdam, 1737 or 1738) or else fitted with a t.p. in order to be printed (the t.p., approbations and introductions following [fol. 2-6] are written in a different hand on slightly smaller sheets); inasmuch as this edition is not listed in standard bibliographies of Hebrew imprints (JNUL Bibliography of the Hebrew book; Winograd, Otsar; Bet eked sefarim), the latter alternative may be the case. However, in a list of Perez' published and unpublished works compiled in 5500 [1739 or 1740] (fol. 273r), this mahzor is listed among the published ones. Collation: Paper; fol. i + 274 (fol. 7-274 foliated 1-269 in contemporary Hebrew characters) + i fol. Layout: Written in 28 lines (poetry in 2 columns). Former shelfmarks: Zunz ms. 33; Halberstam shelf 430; Montefiore ms. 193. Digitization funded by the Dr. Georgette Bennett and Dr. Leonard Polonsky Digitization Project. Shelfmark: New York, Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary, MS 10763. Hebrew: Sefardic semi-cursive hand. Uri Levi (signed, fol. 273v; perhaps the Amsterdam printer Uri Phoebus ha-Levi); "Ms. 33 Zunz" (signed, front pastedown, verso); S. Halberstam (labels mounted on spine and on front pastedown); Montefiore College, Ramsgate (stamp on fol. 1r and aforementioned labels). |
